Cut! Thrust! Parry! Riposte! The rapiers clash and dance — and all the while Kate is giving ground. Your girlfriend starts to realize that she is outmatched and looks wild-eyed, but there’s nothing she can do. Natalie continues to advance and Kate retreats — until she bumps into a fence and cannot retreat any more.
Kate waves her sword to keep Natalie back, but she is trapped. Then she lets out a sly grin.
“Alright, I admit it,” she says, “You’re better than I am.”
Natalie looks sceptically at her. “Then why are you smiling?”
“Because I know something you don’t know,” smiles Kate, “I am not left-handed!”
With that, she tosses her rapier from her left hand to her right and points it at Natalie.
“That’s the Princess Bride!” you cry out in shock and recognition.
Natalie tries to keep a straight face, but fails and busts out into laughter. Kate joins her and the two embrace. They lower their swords and amble back over to you. “Hang on,” you say, “that whole thing… that was choreographed?”
Kate nods, and starts pulling her T-shirt back on. “Yup,” she says, “During the week, Natalie came over. She was worried she was going to hurt me by accident and wanted to be sure I’d be okay.”
Natalie takes a bottle of water from her car and takes a swig. “Kate’s in good shape, but I always knew this would only go one way. Then I had this idea that you really wanted to see a decent duel and maybe we could arrange that.”
Kate smiles. “We had a wild time. Practicing and play acting.” She hesitates before saying the next part, a little shyly. “Natalie is a really great person.” She moves quickly on. “Anyway, we had a bet as to how far we could get through the fight before you realized.”
“A bet which I won,” Natalie points out, “No one who likes sword fights doesn’t know that line.”
You are delighted to see the two of them relaxed and happy in each other’s company but are also a little confused. And horny. But confused. “So, what does that mean for us?” you asked.
Kate and Natalie exchange a look. Their body language becomes a little awkward and uneasy, and it’s Natalie that answers first. “Kate is pretty awesome and I can see why you like her — and I’ve been glad of the chance to get to know her better. We’re not exactly wild about the idea of sharing you, but we’re willing to try and find a way to make it work.”
You look at Kate, who also gives a slight nod.
This did not wind up as expected, but you can’t say you are not delighted. “You are both awesome,” you say, “and I promise I will do my part in making this work.”
Natalie smiles and heads to her car. “Come on,” she says, “follow me back to mine. It’s not far. Once there, we can assess him on his… sword-play.”
Both you and Kate follow suit and drive off after Natalie — and into a whole new adventure.
